What is ‘Mindfulness’? It is a great buzz word going around these days but not too many people understand what it means.
Some people have told me that it sounds like something ‘spiritual’ and therefore not what they are ‘into’ whilst others have said ‘it sounds like New Age stuff. The truth is, that ‘mindfulness’ is not something that you can put into a box or classify. It is like saying that ‘being’ or ‘existing’ can be classified, because that is what mindfulness is – it is about being in a state of mind that is present and aware – it is about living in reality instead of the stories inside your head!
Mindfulness practice takes us out of the constant ‘hamster wheel’ of thoughts in our heads and brings us into a space where we live our lives instead of missing life because we are always in our heads thinking either of the past or the future!
In a nutshell, Mindfulness is the cognitive awareness of what is actually happening in the ‘now’ moment rather than living in the past or the future.
Mindfulness does not mean that you don’t plan for the future or learn from the past, but it does mean that you don’t spend your entire time missing out on what is actually happening in your life!
Practicing meditation is a way to learn to be mindful, but it is not the only way. Mindfulness is a proven way to lift your spirits, alleviate anxiety, and a host of other wonderful ‘side-effects’ including inner peace.
There is nothing religious about mindfulness or meditation, and nor is there anything about it that isn’t perfectly in line with every spiritual or religious teaching!
Mindfulness-based programmes are now being offered in many diverse contexts and with diverse populations, including clinical, education, social care and business.
